| | Description | The Ludwig LJR106 Junior Drum Set is an affordable way to start 'em out early! The LJR1064 features bold new color options and comes complete with a throne and hi-hat stand. When Ludwig says complete, they mean it! This set also comes with the cymbals pictured, a bass drum pedal and all heads. Ludwig Drums There's a reason the world's best drummers are playing Ludwig drums. Because for 90 years, Ludwig has designed and crafted their drum kits and components with both eyes on quality, and both ears on sound. The Ludwig sound is inimitable. The look? To say they look good is simply an understatement. But that beauty is more than skin deep. Ludwig knows that along with your music comes a long series of setups, performances, tear downs and moves. So they build their kits to keep looking and sounding good, gig after gig after gig. Ludwig kits have been carefully selected to give you that legendary Ludwig look and sound, matched to your musical tastes, your skill level and - importantly - your budget. | |

Best I've Seen For The Money Oct 15, 2011
By El Gobbes I bought this kit today, and am very happy with it so far. I guess it's assumed by manufacturers that buyers of drum sets don't need instructions because it's pretty cut and dry, plus there isn't only one way to set up drums. I remember my first set. My parents had no clue how to set it up. The snare was on the immediate right of the bass drum and about 2-3' up on the stand. Anyway... As far as the sound quality. A lot of that has to do with the heads you use, as well as any preferred customization that the drummer might want to make. You can't ever expect the sound you want right out of the box. The first thing I always do is take the front bass head off and put a blanket or pillow up against the beater head and put the front head back on. I haven't messed with the rest of the drums yet, but a good thing to try is to take a 1.5" piece of masking tape, fold the middle but leave some tape exposed on both sides. Then adhere the tape close to the rim in an area that isn't played on. You can do that any number of times to create the sound you want. It helps to get rid of any unwanted echo/resonance. Tuning is also important. You need to mess around until you get the sound you want. I would say that the sound quality out of the box is pretty good. The cymbals are tinny and basic, but I wouldn't expect much more with a junior kit. Good sounding cymbals can be VERY expensive, and I wouldn't recommend buying those until the drummer knows how to hit them properly (not hit through), and that he/she wants to stick with it. Once my children learn how to play, or destroy the cymbals I'll get new ones. These cymbals are fine to learn on as long as you can tolerate the noise. Another thing, is that buying better cymbals could mean having to buy better stands as well. A light weight stand doesn't hold up well with a heavier cymbal. You need a heavyweight with double braced legs. Playing drums can be very expensive, but remember you get what you pay for. I've made that mistake plenty of times. Start slow, and buy/upgrade slowly.
Nice set Dec 18, 2011

There's some whining here about assembly. I've never assembled a drum set before and was able to knock it out in about an hour. I was trying to take my time so that I wouldn't scratch anything. Just go to the Ludwig site, and there is a link under support for video assembly. It's not hard at all.
I think this set is awesome. It looks and sounds good. I looked at several junior sets before ordering this one. I am 42 and have been playing guitar since I was a young teenager. I have some good gear and can spot junky stuff. This is not junky. It's not high end either, but you will be very happy with it. Like other drummers have told me, this is a starting point. From here you upgrade. If my son sticks with it, I'll upgrade the heads and symbols. Learning music is like learning a language, patience. You have to start somewhere, and this is a great fun start for a little person.
Great starter kit Dec 04, 2011
By Pinto Love this kit. The cymbals he has were added and not part of the kit. The kit is easy to assemble, tune, and is very durable. Here is a You Tube video of my son playing: [...]

Assembly confusing Aug 20, 2010
By MB We got this for our 9 yr old son. When the box came, there was no manual provided for assembly. After about 15 minutes, we noticed a sticker on the outside box stating to go to the Ludwig website for video instructions. So, that means you need to assemble the drumkit in whatever room your computer is set up in (which is NOT the room we intended to set the drum up in). The video showed a different kit being assembled, and some of the hardware and steps were not applicable to the set we have. This made it VERY confusing and there were points during the video where we were completely lost. My husband assembled it somewhat on his own because the video wasn't helping much. It took us 2 hours and a lot of hair pulling.
Once assembled, the drum kit looks very nice. The cymbals however sound very "tinny". I don't think the sound quality of this kit is 5-star, but for the price I would say we're fairly satisfied. We plan to use this kit for 1 year, and then buy a better quality, full-sized kit if our son continues.
Other than the assembly, we are fairly happy with this kit and my son loves it.
