4An Excellent Outdoor Drum, a Tolerable Beginner Drum  Sep 22, 2004 By J. Bradley Hicks
The first thing you need to know about this drum is that it is nigh invulnerable. You could practically drive a truck over the body. I've used mine for a camp stool on many occasions. The synthetic head isn't completely invulnerable; from having it rattle around loose in the trunk of my car, it picked up a couple of nicks, but nothing that's had any effect on it.

The second thing you need to know about this drum is that it makes a great outdoor drum. The synthetic head and fiberglass body are completely unaffected by humidity, and almost completely unaffected by temperature at any range that I've ever been willing to drum outside in. I've known people who've played them in pouring rain. Not only did it not hurt the drum, it stayed in tune. (But more on that later.)

Furthermore, it's very affordable, and the combination of affordable and durable makes for a reasonably good first drum.

Now, the down sides. The glued synthetic head will never go out of tune. On the other hand, you can't tune it if you want to, not without replacing the whole head. The synthetic body that makes it so cheap and indestructible is also very hard and not all porous, so it has a somewhat sharp sound. If a ceramic djembe or a metal djembe doesn't disappoint you, then this won't either, but it's at best a distant cousin of the rich tones you get out of a good wooden djembe. And the relatively small synthetic head gives a somewhat limited range of notes; a larger, hand tuned natural head will give you a wider variety of pitch to play with.

All of that being said, I love mine to pieces. I recently got rid of a bunch of drums, because I wasn't going to as many drum circles as I used to. This is the one I kept.

5Goodbye, pots and pans!  Jan 10, 2001
My 27-month old was outgrowing his small plastic Fisher Price drum and mommy and daddy were going insane listening to him march around banging pot lids. The Lollipop Drum was a great solution. It is very simple but it is one of his favorite toys. The sound is nice and not ear-shattering. Mom and dad like to play on it, too. We bought ours in a toy store and offered him a choice of the Lollipop Drum and a tin drum with two sticks and a neck strap. It was no contest. We're getting another one for a cousin. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4Warning: handle can easily break  Oct 31, 2001
I bought this toy for my daughter last year for Christmas, based largely on the reviews I read here. Less than two weeks after she got it, the handle snapped right off. Now, my daughter is not known for being particularly gentle with her toys, but still I expected a longer life span than that. Yes, it's an attractive, realistic-sounding drum, but potential buyers should know that it can also break easily.

5What a beautiful toy!  Mar 01, 2000
I was so happy with the lollipop drum--it's well made and pleasing to look at and play! I have recommended it to my friends because it is functional as well as pretty to look at.

5A winner!  Oct 01, 2001
Colorful, fun, and easy on the ears. This drum definitely belongs on our favorite toy list! We also like the fact that it is easy to march with since it only has one mallet and the drum is carried in the other hand. Fun, fun, fun!
